Select as a focus of discussion, a visible leader with whom all member are reasonably familiar.
Mr. Khandokar Mahabub Alam, Additional Chief Engineer and Project Director Jatrabari Flyover.
Each group chooses a different leadership model and relate it to that leader.
A.Model applies to that leader
B.Model fails to apply reality to that leader
Group A
Group A chooses the contingency model and relate the leader according to the guidelines.
(A)As Mr. Khandokar Mahabub Alam appointed to that project to smoothly, effectively and cost effectively run the one of the biggest project of Bangladesh which is nearly of 700 crore taka and the group member of Group A are Government employee, they choose contingency model of leadership, where leadership with member relation good. Task structure is structured and leader position power is strong.
(B)The model fails to apply to those employees who are not intended to do work. Being this is a Government Organization lazy people chance not to work.
Group B
(A)Group B choose path goal model, because they are not employee of Government Organization, they are from contractors, and consultant parts, so path goal model (Fig 2) satisfy them and will reach them their organization goal.
(B)Some persons who are failing to take chance from leader assistance are not support the model.
Hold a brief discussion to explore way in which the models are similar, different and potentially complementary to each other.
Similar
Contingency model and path goal model both motivates the employee for best effort, develops employees' quality, assign goals, feedback and evaluate.
Different
Path goalmodel is a participative model where contingency approach model is directive.
Potentially complementary to each other
(A)In contingency model sometimes participation is necessary like path goal model.
(B)In path goal model needs autocratic decision like contingency model.
Derive a set of action implication for yourselves as a future leader based on different models.
According to previous discussion we can easily derive a set of action for implication a leadership approach to be a good leader in future. These are:
(A)Develop leader-member relation
(B)Identify and understand goal
(C)Identify employee needs
(D)Appropriate goals are established
(E)Make leader position strong
(F)Increase employee ability and willingness
(G)Provide assistance on employee path goal
(H)Monitor and corrective action for employees
(I)Prepare myself (leader) as a problem shooter
