I am Roshani Kandel, originally from Kathmandu Nepal and recently doing MPH after finishing BSC Nursing from Dhaka, Bangladesh. I have done my A-level from Delhi, India. I have done a research on 'Experiences and Preferences of SCU nurses of SCU in ICDDR,B' during my internship of BSc Nursing. I had already presented a defense presentation on that topic as well. V. Importance of status of women in the development of nursing profession in South Asia

It is estimated that a girl works for 10 hours a day on an average for 315 days in a year providing the family an annual labor, which at minimum wage, would cost approximately Rs. 2200/- to hire. By the time she ceases to be a child, the girl has contributed assistance to the family which in economic terms is around Rs. 40,000. So understanding of male members of the family to the special needs of girl child is really necessary. They should work with the equal treatment, dignity and respect for girl children in the family and community including support and help in their day to day work; then only girl children get the opportunities for self-development. Women in the South Asian society have made their lifestyle on focusing the family matter but no proper use of family planning. If the government can provide more opportunities for female in the sector of employment, health, politics, policy, and media and make some strict law about dowry system and trafficking; automatically reputation of women will increase. Different planning and programs like giving micro credit service to let the women do something independently, providing school education free and trainings to gain skill, etc will automatically manage their stress about empowerment. So that there is better chance to get well empowered women in nursing and it is also important to make the women aware of their potential and make the best use of it (Fourth World Conference on Women, 2007, pg 47). Entrance of women in nursing from wealthy family like we discussed earlier, has also positive influence to encourage people in this profession.

When the belief system of the society is better and people will realize the importance of status of women, they only women can reach for everything. Once the education of women increases, more competition would bring both qualitative and quantitative growth in the profession of nursing and people will start respecting the nursing profession too. Then nurses with good knowledge and skill can deal with different situation critically and creatively and the chance of dominance is less in the working area which helps to increase the level of their autonomy and empowerment. Both in the community and hospital in the developed countries enough resources are available for the students and trainers to train the nurses. People from South Asia also need many practical trainers and good nursing libraries and better organizations with the international standard education to improve the status of nurses. Nursing in India and Nepal also can improve a lot because they have their own some regulatory body. Curriculum and the reflection are also the factors for nurses in Nepal to improve the profession (Ogilvie, L. 1998).

VI. Summary

The status of women is not a concept but is their access to different possessions in the family or in the community. The status of women was not good from the beginning and they are dominated in the South Asian society in different aspects to access their ability. Due to the male dominance attitude of the society, women are left behind in case of literacy, education, employment, autonomy, politics, and administration etc. On the other hand, nursing is supposed as a female occupation and as female are suppressed in their development, their profession is also not able to upgrade in any means. Socio cultural factors like their perception, boundaries, family responsibilities along with environmental factors like domination, lack of facilities, have influenced a lot in the role of women in nursing profession.

On balance, the importance of women status is necessary to promote the status of nursing profession. Attitudes of traditional culture are fixed for long time, so they need to be changed for the significant improvements in women’s status. Thorough studies often show that high levels of education and household income do not necessarily declare women’s status in societies with strong traditions of male domination. Poor and uneducated women are forced to be strong and independent due to economic necessity compared to the relatively prosperous and educated women who might be more controlled within the household. So social modernization is more important than the economic development because once person is well educated and civilized, automatically they will be benefited from economy too. From the school level gradually reducing gender gaps and increasing employment in many countries suggests that the status of women is improving. Women’s increasing life expectancy at birth also points to advances in nutrition and healthcare. (Changing Status of Women in South Asian Society, 2009)

Once there is understanding of both partners in a family, then woman also can do job outside apart from household work and can serve the people. Similarly There is already a shortage of nurses and once it maintains, whole community will be benefited and for that first of all the multidisciplinary team and all stakeholders of the community need to have respect for the nursing profession and to do that, we have to perceive the dignity of women positively.

VII. Conclusion and recommendation

Finally we can conclude by saying that t is very important to improve the status of women to improve the status of nursing. Social perception of women as a child bearing machine, illiteracy of mother, male dominance and less health service focused for family planning; force woman to bear many children. There is a need of more educators, good training, decrease of gender gap, and building of some policy in favor of women along with increment in some budget for the development of nursing profession. If government provides free education to the poor child or may be making free for all girls up to 10th standard, then literacy rate will be increased more. In the society, there is a requirement of orientation to the women with newspapers, counseling, books, advocacy as well as there is a requirement of representation for victim wives, training packages, and women centre for filling the gaps, for education, discrimination etc and this can bring a lot of difference in improving the status of women as well as nursing profession.

Similarly there is requirement of better security system for women to feel more secure and better salary, facilities to feel independent personally. Scholarship programs will encourage more girls to study further as well as increase in seat number is necessary in nursing. Free Continual Professional Development program and regular training in the working area would provide better education for the nurses. International standard education on regular basis, care giving community and other factors will help to build the status of women and nursing profession. Dr. Singh recommends advertising in the paper about nursing like other jobs to create good perception among youths (Singh, 2009).
